What happens in youth training shapes the next 70 years of health

The years from childhood through adolescence and into early adulthood represent the most critical window for building physical capacity. Bone density reaches its peak by the mid-20s — the peak you achieve determines your baseline for the entire rest of your life. Movement patterns, motor skills, and fundamental athletic competencies developed in youth persist as structural advantages. The habits built during these years are the ones most likely to be maintained long-term.

Youth physical activity is dramatically declining in developed countries. Less than 20% of adolescents meet physical activity guidelines. Childhood sedentary time has increased by 2–3 hours per day over the past two decades. The downstream health consequences — including accelerated metabolic disease, lower peak bone density, and less robust cardiovascular systems — will compound over decades. Yet the response to appropriate training in youth is extraordinary: bones, muscles, and cardiovascular systems in development respond to exercise stimuli with adaptations that simply cannot be achieved later in life.

Peak Bone Mass — A Once-in-a-Lifetime Window
90% of peak bone mass is achieved by age 18 in girls and age 20 in boys. The peak bone mass you reach in your teens and early 20s is the baseline you draw down from for the rest of your life. Every 10% increase in peak bone mass delays osteoporosis by approximately 13 years. Physical activity during growth — particularly weight-bearing and impact activity — is the most powerful determinant of peak bone mass.

Growth plates — the critical consideration
The growth plates (epiphyseal plates) at the ends of long bones are the zones of bone elongation. They are the weakest part of the bone during growth — weaker than the surrounding ligaments and tendons. Excessive loading on growth plates during growth can cause injury. Appropriate training does not damage growth plates; inappropriate loading (excessive volume, poor technique, maximum-load powerlifting before full maturation) can.

Neural adaptations before hormonal
Before puberty, the major strength gains from resistance training are neural — improved motor unit recruitment, coordination, and movement efficiency — rather than muscle hypertrophy. This is because anabolic hormones (testosterone) needed for significant muscle growth are not yet present in the concentrations found in adults. This does not make pre-pubertal resistance training less valuable — neural adaptations are real and important.

Bone density window
The most responsive period for bone density development is before and during puberty. Impact activities (jumping, skipping, running, gymnastics, ball sports) during this window produce superior bone density outcomes to starting later. This is one of the clearest age-specific training effects in all of exercise science.

Early specialisation risk
Early single-sport specialisation before age 12–14 is associated with increased overuse injury rates, higher burnout rates, and — paradoxically — lower rates of reaching elite performance than late specialisation. Broad multi-sport participation in childhood develops more robust movement capabilities and reduces injury risk while maintaining long-term athletic development potential.

How to support a young athlete's development

Prioritise fun and variety in early years
The primary goal in youth sport is developing a love of movement and physical competence. This requires enjoyment — which comes from varied, playful, age-appropriate activity. Children who enjoy movement become active adults. Children who are pushed too hard, too early, often don't.

Support strength training from adolescence
Well-coached resistance training for adolescents is safe, effective, and beneficial — it reduces injury risk in sport, improves bone density, and builds confidence. The evidence does not support the myth that resistance training stunts growth — this has been thoroughly debunked. Ensure good coaching and appropriate load progression.

Monitor for RED-S (Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport)
Young athletes — particularly in aesthetic and weight-class sports — are at risk of underfuelling relative to training demands. RED-S impairs bone development, hormonal function, immune function, and performance. Ensure adequate caloric and protein intake, and watch for warning signs: stress fractures, hormonal disruption, persistent fatigue, or disordered eating behaviours.

The bone density and movement skills built in youth are structural advantages that persist for life. Every active hour in childhood and adolescence is an investment in a healthier, more capable adult body.
