Lesson Overview
No single coaching approach works for every client. Personality psychology gives us evidence-based frameworks to understand individual differences and tailor our coaching accordingly.
Learning Objectives
- Describe the Big Five (OCEAN) personality traits and their coaching relevance
- Explain the DISC model and identify practical applications in client interactions
- Understand locus of control and its impact on client responsibility and autonomy
- Recognise how introversion/extroversion affects training environment preference
- Apply personality insights to customise communication and feedback style
The Big Five (OCEAN)
The most research-validated personality model. Each dimension exists on a spectrum:
Openness
High: curious, variety-seeking. Low: prefers routine and structure
Conscientiousness
High: disciplined, organised. Strong predictor of adherence
Extraversion
High: energised by social interaction. Low: prefers quiet, personal sessions
Neuroticism & Agreeableness
High N: needs reassurance. High A: cooperative, responds to harmony
Locus of Control
Clients with an internal locus believe they control outcomes — they take ownership and respond well to autonomy-supportive coaching. Clients with an external locus attribute outcomes to luck or others — they need more structure, encouragement, and explicit success evidence to shift toward internal attribution over time.
