Lesson Overview

The evidence linking regular exercise to improved mental health is now overwhelming. As a coach, understanding this science gives you the language and confidence to position AURUM training as a mental health intervention — not just a physical one.

The Neurobiology of Exercise

Exercise triggers multiple neurochemical responses that directly improve mood and reduce anxiety. Within minutes of exercise onset:

Endorphins
Natural opioids released during exercise — produce euphoria and pain relief
Serotonin
Mood stabiliser — exercise increases serotonin synthesis and release
BDNF
Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor — promotes neuron growth, learning, memory
Cortisol Regulation
Regular training reduces chronic cortisol — the primary stress hormone

Clinical Evidence

Chekroud et al. (2018, The Lancet Psychiatry, n=1.2 million) found that individuals who exercised had 43% fewer days of poor mental health per month than non-exercisers. For team sports, exercise classes, and cycling, the benefit was largest. Even 45-minute sessions 3–5 times per week showed the greatest mental health gains — consistent with AURUM's optimal training frequency.
